Taking a wide receiver in Round 1 isn’t the only way the Packers can strengthen their passing attack. Securing a versatile weapon at the tight end position could do wonders to improve Green Bay’s versatility in 2023.

This year’s tight end prospect class is considered to be filled with high-end prospects. It might be tempting for the Packers to wait until later in the draft to land Robert Tonyan’s successor due to the group’s depth.

Pulling the trigger on the consensus No. 1 tight end in the class at No. 15 could also make a lot of sense. Mayer isn’t a burner, but his 4.7 40-yard dash time shows he has enough speed to trouble linebackers and safeties down the seem. The former Notre Dame star’s proficiency as an in-line blocker makes him the most complete elite tight end in this year’s draft class.

Mayer’s physicality at the point of attack makes him an ideal fit for LaFleur’s offensive system. He can sell Green Bay’s play-action concepts by making contact at the point of attack and then breaking downfield on a variety of pass routes. Mayer may not project as a potential superstar but he could be an above-average starter for the next decade in Green Bay.
