NFL Rumors: Lions don’t get Jalen Ramsey, but they get someone better

Within the first two hours of the legal tampering period, the Detroit Lions made their first big splash: NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that cornerback Cameron Sutton agreed to a three-year, $33 million deal with $22.5 million guaranteed.

One of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ top pending free agents found his next home, and it’s going to be an exciting ride for Sutton who gets to join a young and hungry Lions squad.

After being rumored to land former Los Angeles Rams CB Jalen Ramsey this offseason, the Lions found themselves a high-upside starter with the potential to outperform Ramsey in the coming years.

The 28-year-old corner is arguably entering his prime after recording a career-best season in 2022, allowing just 32 receptions on 72 targets. Sutton boasted a 44.4 percent completion percentage allowed and was set to enter free agency as one of the most highly coveted corners on the market behind James Bradberry.

Did the Lions overpay Sutton ever so slightly at $11 million a year? Maybe. But it was a move Detroit desperately needed to make to patch up their pass defense, and it could mean the Lions don’t have to use their first-round pick on a cornerback in the upcoming draft.

As for the Steelers, they can only bite their tongue and hope they won’t regret letting Sutton go. If Pittsburgh really wanted him, it wouldn’t have toyed with fate. Lamar Jackson may have a few words to say about that…
