March Madness rankings: No. 40-31

40. Furman (27-7): The Paladins finished first in the Southern Conference and will be a very dangerous team in the NCAA Tournament. This is Furman’s first March Madness experience in 43 years, but don’t be surprised if they stick around longer than most experts think.

39. USC (22-10): The Trojans have an interesting resumé. They own victories over UCLA, Auburn, and Arizona State, but have lost to Wisconsin and Oregon. Andy Enfield’s squad has their work cut out for them.

38. Providence (21-11): The Friars finished fifth in a very difficult Big East Conference. Ed Cooley has seen his team take down UConn, Marquette, and Creighton this season and the Friars have top scorer Bryce Hopkins leading the way.

37. West Virginia (19-14): After missing the Bid Dance last season, Bob Huggins will enter the NCAA Tournament having lost 14 games in 2022-23. The Mountaineers could be an early exit, but it’s hard to bet against Huggy Bear in March having made it to the Sweet 16 three times in the last decade.

36. Penn State (22-13): The Nittany Lions, led by Jalen Pickett, picked a good time of year to start playing their best basketball. Penn State lost in the Big Ten Tournament final and will be a team to keep a close eye during the tournament.

35. Auburn (20-12): Is there a more mercurial team in the tournament than the Auburn Tigers? Bruce Pearl’s team has victories over Tennessee, Arkansas, and Northwestern, but got absolutely waxed by Kentucky earlier this year as well. The Tigers were run off the floor by 32 points.

34. Maryland (21-12): Kevin Willard has the Terps back in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland went 11-9 in the Big Ten but beat Purdue and hung an 18-point loss on the Miami Hurricanes earlier this season.

33. Memphis (26-8): Penny Hardaway’s crew loves to get out on the fast break. The Tigers can score at will and have a win over Houston this season. Memphis doesn’t get a ton of scoring from outside the arc, so they’ll have to push the pace in order to stick around in March.

32. Iowa (19-13): The Hawkeyes finished seventh in the Big Ten, but possess perhaps the most improbable win of the season in the team’s overtime thriller over the Michigan State Spartans. Iowa scores a lot, but they also allow a lot of buckets on the other end of the court.

31. Illinois (20-12): The Fighting Illini have victories over UCLA and Texas, both of whom secured 2-seeds in the NCAA Tournament. But Illinois is pretty horrific from three-point land, and that could be their undoing in the tournament.
