NFL rumors: Michael Thomas recruited Derek Carr to Saints
Michael Thomas didn’t know if he’d be a New Orleans Saint heading into next season. However, the minute Derek Carr signed in the Bayou, his mind was made up.
As Carr said at his press conference, the QB-WR duo hit it off right away, with Thomas reaching out to him via a long, personable phone call. From there on, New Orleans made keeping Thomas on an abbreviated one-year deal a priority. The contract is loaded with incentives, but it’s his budding relationship with Carr that might be his most valuable asset.
“The first time I talked to him on the phone, I don’t think he wanted me to get off the phone,” Carr said. “I really enjoyed talking to him, and I told Mickey (Loomis), you talk to Mike Thomas and you feel like you two could go out there and face the world.”
Thomas’s new deal gives him millions of reasons to bond with his new quarterback, and help other wide receivers on the roster play to their strengths around him.
“When he started recruiting and talking to me, he wasn’t even trying to recruit me,” Carr recounted. “He was just like, ‘When are we getting to work, we’re wasting time, time is ticking.’ I was like, ‘Dude, I’m the same way.’ We’ll get there. But I think that our relationship has grown through the process, and I’m looking forward to hopefully making that relationship grow even stronger.”
That budding relationship should only grow from here.
