St. Louis Cardinals spring training biggest losers No. 2: Dylan Carlson, OF

The end of Dylan Carlson’s 2022 season was disrupted by an ailing wrist issue that hampered his at-bats and his ability to field his position. He’s used the offseason to gain some muscle and improve at the plate.

With Lars Nootbaar and Tyler O’Neill competing in the WBC, Carlson had a shot at securing his role in the Cardinals outfield. Instead, there is talk that Walker has secured a spot on the team. Noobaar’s outstanding play for Team Japan makes him a shoo-in to play in the Cardinals outfield. O’Neill has used his offseason strength and cardio plan to improve at the plate and return to the Gold Glove-caliber outfielder the team missed last season.

O’Neill played centerfield for Team Canada and was training during Cardinals spring training. O’Neill and Carlson could find themselves platooning the centerfield position. While this is good news for O’Neill, Nootbaar, and Walker, it’s disappointing for Carlson as he had a huge opportunity to secure his role on the team.
