Antoine Davis and Detroit Mercy missed out on postseason basketball, thus ending the fifth-year senior’s chance to break the NCAA all-time scoring record.

Antoine Davis was three points away from tying Pete Maravich for career points in college basketball. After missing a last-second 3-pointer at the end of the second half in the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinal, Davis solidified his spot as the No. 2 all-time scorer in college basketball history

At least that’s what the CBI tournament decided.

If there were any hope for Davis to finally break the record, it would have had to been through postseason tournament play, and the CBI was Detroit Mercy’s best shot at getting any additional games on the schedule for this season after posting just a 14-19 record. 16 teams were invited to play in the CBI, and Detroit Mercy was not one of them.

Antoine Davis’ reaction to missing CBI, Pete Maravich’s scoring record is absurd

According to Larry Lage of the Associated Press, the No. 2 scorer in college hoops sounded off on getting snubbed.

“I’m upset about it,” Davis said. “I feel like I got cheated out of something that they can’t ever give back to me. I think it’s selfish — and weird — that people emailed or called the CBI to say we shouldn’t be in the tournament because they didn’t want me to break the record.”

Regardless of the hijinks and politics that occurred during this particular instance, the record shows that Detroit Mercy’s record was a losing one.

Of the 16 teams in the CBI, not one of them has a record below .500. The Titans finished the season with a 14-19 record, and wouldn’t fit in with the clique of post-season college basketball teams. Between the NCAA Tournament, the NIT, and the CBI, none of the participating teams have a losing record.

So, while it’s tough to see a rising star like Antoine Davis fall just short of a monumental achievement, it’s even more difficult to argue that there was any foul play resulting in Detroit Mercy missing out on late March basketball.

Antoine Davis averaged 28.2 points per game this season, and finished with 3,664 career points. Pete Maravich scored a career total of 3,667 points during his time at LSU. And it’s also worth noting that Maravich accomplished his feat in three seasons while Davis did so over five thanks to receiving an additional year of eligibility after the COVID-19 pandemic.
