NFL Rumors: Will Cowboys extend Tony Pollard?

Tony Pollard has signed his franchise tag with the Dallas Cowboys, committing to The Star for the next season. The ideal situation for both sides would be a contract extension beyond just 2023-24. If they hope to reach that agreement, they have until July 17.

What would a contract extension for Pollard look like? While he has some looming injury concerns, Pollard looked excellent when healthy last season. He’s expected to lead the Dallas backfield now that Ezekiel Elliott is out of the picture. Per resident Cowboys fan, FanSided’s Cody Williams, a realistic deal for Pollard may be similar to what Miles Sanders signed with the Carolina Panthers earlier this winter.

Carolina signed Sanders to a four-year, $25 million deal. Sanders received a $6 million signing bonus, and nearly half of his contract was fully-guaranteed. For a running back position that is decreasing in value annually, that’s not a bad contract.

Pollard is a better player than Sanders at this stage, and his usage rate will be higher in Dallas. There’s a reason he’s making over $10 million this coming campaign. The Dallas back should ask for over $30 million on any four-year contract. Nonetheless, it’s unclear if the Cowboys are willing to bend to that degree.
