NWSL Season Preview 2023: 1 major question for each team
By Oliver Hunt
For Angel City FC: Will Christen Press, Sydney Leroux, and Alyssa Thompson annihilate everyone’s backlines?
Angel City made a splash at the draft this year when they acquired of the number one overall pick from Gotham to secure Alyssa Thompson. This made Alyssa the first high schooler ever selected in the NWSL draft. She joins the already talented squad of Angel City FC, including the likes of Christen Press, Simone Charley, Sarah Gordon, and Sydney Leroux, and Ali Riley.
If the Christen Press comeback tour is truly loading, every team should be exceptionally worried. While Press was still listed as out with an SEI on the most recent roster update, Angel City has assured fans that it’s just a technicality and there seems to be a high likelihood that she will see minutes this season.
Alyssa has been the biggest offseason move for Angel City FC in terms of acquisitions, but their greatest move is letting their injured bench heal and gear up to play this season. Angel City were within grabbing distance of the playoffs last season, and that was with several of their best players out. If they can maintain a healthy bench this year, every other team will need to brush up on their defending, and even that might not be enough.
