The Tar Heels could bank on the potential of former 4-star Kowacie Reeves

There was a good deal of hype around Kowacie Reeves coming to Gainesville. The Macon, GA native was a consensus 4-star recruit and ranked No. 31 overall by 247Sports in the 2021 class. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite pan out as hoped with a struggling Florida team and Reeves never quite found his role, playing just 15.5 minutes per game as a freshman and only 19.3 this past year as a sophomore.

But the 6-foot-6 guard was heralded for a reason coming out of high school. Reeves has great length and athleticism on the wing, which give him tremendous versatility potentially as both a playmaker and defender, someone who could potentially slot into the role — albeit with a bit smaller size — long occupied by Leaky Black.

More importantly, though, the biggest shock for Reeves with the Gators was his shooting woes. He shot only 37.7% from the field this past season and only 26.2% from 3-point range. That’s shocking because another trait in his recruiting profile was being a “top notch shooter” praised for his form and quick release.

This would definitely be a gamble for Hubert Davis and UNC basketball but one that has legitimate reason behind it based on the potential of Reeves. The Tar Heels have reached out to Reeves already, per reports, so perhaps they see that as well and are willing to bet that a move to Chapel Hill could be what Reeves needs to unlock his talent.
