Gordon Graceffo won’t get a roster spot for now, anyway

In the lead-up to Spring Training, it was believed Graceffo could have had an opportunity to make the team out of camp. With Wainwright retiring and some questions about the backend of the rotation, Graceffo could have used an impressive spring to leverage a roster spot.

Graceffo was shifted to the minor league camp early after a frustrating start. He appeared in two games during Spring Training, starting one. He pitched 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and four runs, compiling a 7.71 ERA.

This will ultimately be good for Graceffo and the Cardinals, as he can work on pitching in a less intense environment. He should use this season in the minor leagues for development. With Wainwright retiring, Steven Matz and Miles Mikolas are the only two starting pitchers signed after this season. Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery will be eligible for free agency after this season. Graceffo, 23, has a bright future and can take his time improving this season.
