MLB Rumors: Yankees’ Luis Severino will likely start 2023 season on injured list

New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino suffered a right lat strain following his March 21 performance against the Detroit Tigers and is expected to start the 2023 season on IL.

Less than a week to go before Opening Day, Severino was shut down on Saturday and will sit out for five to seven days, according to New York general manager Aaron Boone.

Severino’s injury deals yet another blow to the Yankees’ pitcher rotation, which is already without Carlos Rodon on Opening Day. Nestor Cortes is slowly working his way back up to full health, and the team at least still has superstar Gerrit Cole to headline the group.

With the failed but not forgotten trade of Frankie Montas, the Yankees’ pitching depth will be tested this season: Domingo German, Clarke Schmidt, and others round out the back end of the quickly thinning rotation.

In the wake of Severino’s injury, New York may also call upon the services of unproven pitchers Jhony Brito or Randy Vasquez to provide relief, or perhaps dip their toes in the trade market early in the season.
