NFL Draft: 5 players Chiefs should draft in first round
Chiefs first-round draft targets: 4. Darnell Wright
The aforementioned Taylor was a standout right tackle in Jacksonville but clearly arrives in Kansas City with the charge to replace Orlando Brown on the left side. That leaves the starting right tackle spot as a potential weakness for the Chargers.
It’s possible that Andy Reid and his staff will trust Lucas Niang to regain the starting spot, but he will need to recover from a torn left patellar tendon in the offseason. That’s why grabbing a quality prospect like Wright in Round 1 could be a shrewd pick for the Chiefs.
The former Tennessee star has quality size for the tackle position but is only an average athlete. He makes up for any concerns about his speed with a healthy combination of length and patience when it comes to pass protection.
Reid might prefer to get more of a mauler on the right side to pair with Taylor, but Wright shows too much promise as a pass blocker to ignore. Protecting Mahomes is priority one for the Chiefs every season. Landing Wright if he’s still on the board at 31 would increase the team’s chances of keeping their quarterback upright for the full season.
