Chiefs first-round draft targets: 2. Jalin Hyatt

The Chiefs’ offense only got more efficient after dealing Hill, but there’s no question that Mahomes and company could benefit from more speed on the outside. That’s why adding a burner like Hyatt in Round 1 could be attractive to Veach and the front office.

Hyatt ran a respectable 4.4-second 40-yard dash at the combine which lines up from his tape at Tennessee. He thrived in the Volunteers’ offense as a wideout who could make big plays behind the opposing secondary.

What’s less obvious about Hyatt as a prospect is his ability to make contested catches. He uses his quality size combined with his 40-inch vertical to win 50/50 balls against opposing cornerbacks. That’s the skill that could allow Hyatt to serve as an upgrade over what Smith-Schuster gave the Chiefs last season.

Kansas City might prefer to secure a bigger wide receiver with this pick, but Hyatt’s speed should be a big temptation. The Chiefs need to stretch the field more next year and Hyatt can fill that role.
