Chiefs first-round draft targets: 1. Jaxon Smith-Njigba

Smith-Njigba is the most complete wide receiver prospect on this list. That raises the obvious issue that he likely won’t be on the board when the Chiefs make their pick at 31. The reality is he could be a trade-up target for Kansas City if his draft stock slips in the slightest.

Critics of the former Ohio State star point to his checkered injury history as a reason why his draft stock should slip. Most teams won’t pay that sort of narrative any attention. Smith-Njigba is healthy now and nothing about his health record suggests he will struggle to stay healthy in the future.

Smith-Njigba could arrive in Kansas City and immediately take over the starting slot position. He’s an intricate route runner who also has terrific hands. He’s not an electric athlete but he can keep the chains moving for the Chiefs.

The question on Smith-Njigba for Veach to answer is whether or not he’s worth the price required to move up and land him in Round 1. The Chiefs won’t pay to move into the top 20 to land the talented wideout, but if he slips past that they could easily pounce.
