3. Edward Cabrera, Miami Marlins

Injuries have hampered Cabrera the last two seasons, with less than 200 innings pitched overall. But over his last 11 starts for the Marlins last year, he appeared to have found something (2.89 ERA, 27 percent strikeout rate, .177 batting average against). Some good fortune was definitely there, with a 4.47 FIP and a .210 BABIP against over that span, but he did not miss a turn in the rotation from Aug. 5 on.

When healthy last year, again however briefly overall (14 starts for the Marlins), Cabrera had an average fastball velocity of 96 MPH. But he has a wide pitch arsenal, with four pitches (four-seamer, curveball, changeup and slider) he threw at least 15 percent of the time with whiff rates above 32 percent on three of them (take away the four-seamer; 22.5 percent whiff rate according to Baseball Savant).

3long with having to prove he can stay healthy, getting many wins pitching for the Marlins is a concern for Cabrera’s fantasy value. But as a bet on upside inherent in skills, with wins a fickle stat to chase in fantasy anyway, the young Marlins’ hurler is worth a long look on the fantasy waiver wire.

His rostered rate in Yahoo! leagues is high (see below), but Cabrera is well worth checking on there and on ESPN for those who have to find a fill-in for McKenzie.
