3 Mets Opening Day starters who won’t be on the roster next season
2. NY Mets DH Daniel Vogelbach will not be on the roster next season
Mets fans love Daniel Vogelbach and for good reason. He’s fun to watch and is a really solid hitter. The problem is, he’s extremely limited.
Vogelbach is a solid player doing what he will be doing on the 2023 Mets. He’ll DH against righties and be available as a bat off the bench when a lefty is starting.
Vogelbach slashed .261/.382/.497 with all 18 of his home runs and 52 of his 59 RBI against right-handed pitching. On the contrary, he had just 10 hits in 84 plate appearances with one extra-base hit (a double) against southpaws.
Vogelbach being a one-dimensional hitter while practically being unusable in the field makes him hard to roster, especially for a manager in Buck Showalter who values versatility a lot.
The veteran slugger will be in the lineup against Sandy Alcantara on Opening Day, but will not be in the lineup when Miami starts Jesus Luzardo or Trevor Rogers in the second and fourth games of the season respectively.
He’s a free agent after the season, and I expect the Mets to look internally for his replacement. They have guys like Francisco Alvarez and mainly Mark Vientos whose gloves are question marks but can swing the bat at an MLB level.
