1. NY Mets LF Mark Canha will not be on the roster next season

I wish I didn’t feel this way because Mark Canha is an excellent player and an even better person, but it’s hard to see him fitting into the 2024 equation.

Canha just turned 34 and is entering the final guaranteed year of his contract. He has a club option worth $12.1 million which the Mets could theoretically accept, but I don’t see that happening.

We already know that Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte will make up 2/3 of the outfield, so left field is the only vacant spot. It’s very hard to see them committing to Canha for another season when there’re players like Ian Happ, Hunter Renfroe, and Joc Pederson available and younger.

Another option the Mets have is to put Jeff McNeil out in left and play Luis Guillorme at second. They can even move shortstop prospect Ronny Mauricio to second.

If they don’t like Mauricio at second, he can learn left field. While Mauricio has no outfield experience he’s certainly a good enough athlete for it. They refuse to trade him, so why not?

The Mets have a whole lot of options to cover left field if they opt to not bring back 35-year-old Mark Canha. Most of them are more appealing to me.
