3 reason why Lamar Jackson will be forced to crawl back to the Ravens
1. His style of play requires too much change for other NFL teams
Jackson is a brilliant quarterback when he’s healthy and at his best. He is not, however, a classic dropback passer who can fit in any NFL system. He’s the sort of player that needs an offense to be built around him to maximize his effectiveness.
That’s exactly what the Ravens have done during his tenure with the team. They allow him to throw the ball down the field and pressure opposing defenses with his legs. That’s contributed to some of his injury issues, but it’s also what allowed him to earn an NFL MVP award.
Any team interested in acquiring Jackson will need to drastically shift their offensive philosophy to accommodate his strengths and weaknesses. It’s tough to make that shift in a full off-season. The idea that a team can make such a drastic pivot after free agency is largely done and dusted just isn’t feasible.
Any team that moves to acquire Jackson now will need to accept that 2023 is almost a lost year because they can’t make enough changes to get the best out of him in such a short span of time. Giving up significant draft compensation and paying a fortune to a player who will require such accommodation isn’t an efficient move at this point in the NFL calendar. That’s the biggest reason why Jackson will be forced to eat humble pie and crawl back to the Ravens before Week 1 of the 2023 season kicks off.
