Justin Verlander replacements: Mets sign a former ace

If New York would rather spend some of Steve Cohen’s budget on a short-term Justin Verlander replacement, former Rays, Pirates and Twins starter Chris Archer remains available. Archer has flirted with several teams this offseason, but hasn’t received a deal to his liking.

Archer had an ERA similar to Houser’s last season — just a bit under the 5.00 mark. At 34 years old, Archer believes he still has something left to give. While he’s not the same pitcher the Rays traded to the Pirates in a lopsided deal which helped them acquire Tyler Glasnow and Austin Meadows, Archer can provide a veteran presence at the back end of the New York rotation.

The Mets must also take into account that Verlander AND Jose Quintana, another scheduled starter, is injured as well. This New York team is down two starting pitchers, and is merely one injury away from facing a real crisis in their starting rotation.

Archer would quell those concerns, at least for now.
