25) MLB Power Rankings: Los Angeles Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw deserved a longer contract

Clayton Kershaw is going to pitch forever. It’s amazing how he has managed to stick around this long, remain this effective, and do it all with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He rejoined them this offseason on a one-year deal worth $20 million. A strong first start which featured 6 innings of one-run ball and 9 strikeouts was the ideal way to suggest the Dodgers should be on the hook for at least another. Kershaw will have to do a lot more to prove he’s a valuable piece beyond 2023. Is there any doubt this superhuman starter can stick around in some fashion for several more years?

24) MLB Power Rankings: Pittsburgh Pirates, Same old team

The Pittsburgh Pirates were one of the many 1-2 clubs this weekend who managed to swipe one away from the opponent but took two hits on the chin along the way. The starting pitching was weak. The bats weren’t alive. As true as it may be for some to believe this is the same old Pirates, it’s not. No, they aren’t going to make any serious push for a playoff spot. What they can do is bring a little more excitement. Ke’Bryan Hayes had only one hit all weekend and the other important bats didn’t do all that much either. Give it time. The Pirates will be fun for the first time in a while.

23) MLB Power Rankings: Los Angeles Angels, Logan O’Hoppe needs an extension right now

Do you know who had a really good first weekend for the Los Angeles Angels? It was catcher Logan O’Hoppe. He leads the team with 6 RBI in what has been a fine start to his 2023 campaign. The Angels are hopeful they can do a little more than showcase star power and headline trade rumors this summer. Players like O’Hoppe stepping up is huge. It’s still a little too early to start thinking about extensions, though. Let’s save it for a later date.

22) MLB Power Rankings: Miami Marlins, Jorge Soler is going to turn things around

Jorge Soler had a big Friday night against the New York Mets but the Miami Marlins outfielder has a lot more to show before anyone should believe he has turned things around. It’s a complete and utter overreaction to have any idea of what he can offer this ball club. A major Marlins bust thus far during his tenure with the club, it’s tough to have any reasonable opinion of him other than the “wait and see” approach.

21) MLB Power Rankings: Detroit Tigers, Spencer Torkelson will never be a good MLB player

This is a laughable overreaction optimistic Detroit Tigers fans aren’t ready to accept. Spencer Torkelson didn’t have a good rookie year in 2022. He’s off to a 1 for 11 beginning to this season. Torkelson was the first overall pick from the 2020 MLB Draft so the expectations are, naturally, exponential. Torkelson will at least need to find his power stroke this season. It’s something plenty of his Tigers teammates could rediscover as well.
