15) MLB Power Rankings: Seattle Mariners, The offseason was a disaster

The team the Cleveland Guardians beat three times, the Seattle Mariners, are feeling a lot differently. They had a soft offseason where they didn’t really spend all that much. Additions of Kolten Wong and Teoscar Hernandez via trade haven’t worked out so well thus far. They are 2 for 27 to begin the year. Added in with struggles from Jarred Kelenic and J.P. Crawford, be kind to any Mariners fans you may know this week. It was a rough weekend. They may feel like the offseason is a disaster. It wasn’t, at least not yet.

14) MLB Power Rankings: Chicago Cubs, Every free agent but Dansby Swanson will fail

Dansby Swanson has been fantastic for the Chicago Cubs, picking up 7 hits in his first 12 at-bats. Unfortunately, Trey Mancini, Tucker Barnhart, Cody Bellinger, and Eric Hosmer have all combined for 2 hits in 30 at-bats. Jameson Taillon wasn’t very good in his start either. The Cubs had a questionable offseason where they seemed to patch together a roster with a formula to get them through the year while using the incorrect ingredients. It’s like using coconut oil instead of olive oil. It can work similarly but we all know the difference.

13) MLB Power Rankings: Toronto Blue Jays, Delayed Alek Manoah sophomore slump

Anyone who thinks Alek Manoah’s first dreadful start of the season is a sign of what’s to come is overreacting. It was brutal but this is a guy who has already given the Toronto Blue Jays two awesome seasons. Still only 25, Manoah is on the rise and will undoubtedly remain one of the best pitchers in the league. A delayed sophomore slump for the third-year pitcher is always possible yet very unlikely.

12) MLB Power Rankings: St. Louis Cardinals, This pitching staff is bad

Miles Mikolas, Jordan Montgomery, Ryan Helsley, and Jordan Hicks all had bad weekends for the St. Louis cardinals. Somehow, they still escaped with a 2-1 record. Montgomery didn’t pitch well but did win a game. Meanwhile, Jack Flaherty tossed 5 no-hit innings while walking 7. The Cardinals do have a somewhat suspect pitching staff. Rushing to the judgment that they’re bad is way too early.

11) MLB Power Rankings: Tampa Bay Rays, High payrolls are for chumps

There is some glory for the Tampa Bay Rays after sweeping the Detroit Tigers. It’s not enough to completely change the way baseball fans feel about payrolls. The typically frugal Rays remain one of the lower salaried teams in baseball but fall more into a category of financially responsible than cheap. Either way, six no-hit innings from Jeffrey Springs highlighted the weekend. He struck out 12 along the way while helping to remind everyone it’s not so much about how much you spend but where you invest it.
