MLB Power Rankings: 1 biggest overreaction for each team after opening weekend
By Tim Boyle
10) MLB Power Rankings: New York Mets, Star pitchers are overrated
No Justin Verlander. No Edwin Diaz. The New York Mets still managed to win three out of four against the Miami Marlins. Their one loss was a close one, too. For a ball club with over $60 million on the IL just from that pair of pitchers, one has to wonder if the Tampa Bay Rays are doing things better by spending less and getting the same results.
9) MLB Power Rankings: Chicago White Sox, The division is theirs
Splitting their four-game series against the Houston Astros was huge for the Chicago White Sox this weekend. They did it with some good hitting and some good pitching. They have the capability of being a very good ball club as long as they don’t keep underperforming each year. They passed the first test of the year against the defending champions. The division isn’t theirs just yet but even a .500 start to the year is promising.
8) MLB Power Rankings: Texas Rangers, Jacob deGrom is a bust
The Texas Rangers didn’t get the debut they were hoping for from Jacob deGrom. Is he a bust? Maybe because the Rangers did manage to bring a paddle to the Philadelphia Phillies midway through the game it’s not causing too much concern for fans just yet. However, it’s tough to ignore the 3.2 innings and 5 earned runs given up by deGrom. He has been dominant against the Phillies for most of his career. The early stinker is a bad debut yet a total overreaction to believe he’s a bust.
7) MLB Power Rankings: Boston Red Sox, Adam Duvall is the steal of the offseason
Adam Duvall had a huge debut weekend for the Boston Red Sox. He had 3 doubles, a pair of home runs, and even delivered a walk-off dinger for the club. This is how you want to start it off with your new club. It’s too soon to anoint him the next great Red Sox outfielder or even the steal of the offseason. It could very well become a guy too many teams passed on. More weekends like this and all of the clubs that did pass on him will wonder why they didn’t open up a slot for him.
6) MLB Power Rankings: Atlanta Braves, Travis d’Arnaud should start over Sean Murphy
This is a weird contribution to this week’s MLB Power Rankings. Did the Atlanta Braves really need Sean Murphy? Hitless in his first 7 at-bats while Travis d’Arnaud is already 6 for 13, it raises the previous questions some had when Atlanta made the trade for him then signed him to an extension shortly after. Any doubts about Murphy’s abilities will probably be erased but it still remains a somewhat questionable decision to have two catchers of their ilk. On the bright side, Murphy is only one hit behind Marcell Ozuna who is 1 for 12.
