5) MLB Power Rankings: Houston Astros, Alex Bregman is on the decline

The Houston Astros did manage to win two out of their four games this weekend, no thanks to Alex Bregman. The club’s third baseman is coming off of a down season. He spent his first weekend of the 2023 season going hitless in 16 at-bats while striking out 7 times. The horrid start isn’t the way Bregman or Astros fans wanted to see him begin things. Have some faith. The year is so young it hasn’t even gotten home from the hospital.

4) MLB Power Rankings: Milwaukee Brewers, Corbin Burnes is distracted by his contract

The Milwaukee Brewers are 2-0 and Corbin Burnes is still underpaid. His first start didn’t help him much. He gave up 4 earned runs in only 5 innings of work. He was awarded the team’s lone loss of the year thus far. Could the offseason issues around his contract and trip to arbitration be a distraction? Let’s give him a mulligan for start one of the year. If it continues, maybe there is something to this overreaction.

3) MLB Power Rankings: Colorado Rockies, C.J. Cron is winning the Triple Crown

C.J. Cron had a big weekend for the Colorado Rockies. He already had 3 home runs and 7 RBI to go with his .467 batting average. Any talk of a Triple Crown is premature. We saw him excel early on last year only for his overall season numbers to fall back down to earth by the time the regular season ended. Cron could be a huge bat for the Rockies this year and most likely a trade chip to shop. He might have some early Triple Crown numbers this year but so will other players we know will eventually remember there’s a hole in their swing.

2) MLB Power Rankings: New York Yankees, Anthony Volpe is the answer at shortstop

Slow down. Anthony Volpe had a fine debut weekend for the New York Yankees. Going 2 for 9, he picked up his first pair of hits but he’s far from becoming the answer for the ball club at shortstop. No rookie around the league may have as much pressure on him as Volpe does. He’s playing one of the most famous positions in professional sports, shortstop for the Yankees. Fans are correct to have faith. It’s a miserable existence not to.

1) MLB Power Rankings: San Diego Padres, It’s time to start regretting the Juan Soto trade

Juan Soto didn’t have a great regular season for the San Diego Padres last year. Things picked up in the postseason. Unfortunately, his start to 2023 has been poor. Soto is 1 for 14 right now and the ultimate overreaction to this one bad series is to think the Padres should regret ever trading for him. What makes pulling off the trade for him so impressive is that the Padres don’t have to worry about his free agency until after next offseason. This is a super team worthy of our patience.

Next. 1 trade every MLB team would like to have back. dark
