2) Red Sox players who won’t be rostered by May 1: Kaleb Ort

The Red Sox bullpen should be better than the awful bullpen they had last season thanks to the additions of players like Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin, Richard Bleier, and eventually Joely Rodriguez. While it should be better, it’s still not great.

The Sox lack pitching depth right now with all of their injuries but when these starting pitchers return, at least one spot in the bullpen will have to be taken, and Ort feels like the man to go down.

The right-hander made 25 appearances for the Red Sox last season and had an ERA of 6.35 in 28.1 innings pitched. He has two options left, so they wouldn’t lose him. Zack Kelly is a different reliever who could go down, but he had really strong minor league numbers last season, and hasn’t gotten the same chance at the big league level Ort has had.

The Red Sox have a ton of pitchers on the IL who could slot in either in the rotation or the bullpen when they return, and even have Ryan Sherriff who was a non-roster invitee but threw 6.2 scoreless innings in the spring and has MLB experience.

Relievers often go up and down, especially those who are young and have options. When the Red Sox make bullpen changes, Ort will likely go down.
