NFL news: Bobby Wagner reveals he took less money to join Seattle

It’s official: Bobby Wagner bleeds Seahawk green. The former Los Angeles Rams linebacker joined the Seattle Seahawks this offseason on a one-year, $7 million deal, and it was an especially tender reunion for Wagner.

Wagner was drafted by Seattle back in 2012, and he enjoyed a decade of dominant linebacker play in the city he considered his home. Wagner and Seattle went through a rough patch in the 2021 offseason that led to him being released from his contract, and he ended up signing with the Rams on a five-year deal with the hopes of competing for his second career Super Bowl win.

Long story short, the Rams combusted, and Wagner crawled back home to Seattle where he belongs.

Wagner leaving for LA broke just about every heart in Seattle — that’s how much the fans loved him. He gets a precious chance to end his career with the team that drafted him and revealed just how badly he wanted to come back, even to a franchise that rather unceremoniously dumped him.

The Seahawks legend-in-the-making reportedly took less money to rejoin Seattle, and while it’s not clear exactly how much more he would have made elsewhere, the sentiment is enough.

Seattle is coming off a surprisingly successful season and holds many core roster pieces like Geno Smith, DK Metcalf, and Tyler Lockett; bringing Wagner back should be a massive boost of morale and a valuable addition to the defense, and the team is no doubt eying another postseason run in 2023.

Will this be Wagner’s final opera in Seattle? Kudos to the Seahawks brass on the Wilson trade, but don’t screw this one up.
