2) Phillies outfielder Jake Cave will not be on the roster by May 1

As a depth piece, Jake Cave wasn’t a bad pickup for the Phillies. They’ve run into a bit of a problem. The injury to Rhys Hoskins has made him more of a starter or at least a part-time player. He has 15 plate appearances through their first four games. A pair of singles is all he has contributed.

Cave doesn’t have the pedigree for any of us to believe he’ll do much more than give the Phillies a serviceable performance at the plate this year. Fortunately, with remaining minor league options, Philadelphia can demote him if things aren’t going well and give someone else a chance to bolster their lineup.

Cave had an awesome spring, smashing 4 doubles, 3 triples, and 3 home runs and slashing .462/.500/.827. The ridiculous preseason output hasn’t carried over to the games that actually count. It’s unfortunate. He had a real shot to give the Phillies an offensive boost as an everyday player.

Cave should be put on notice, especially with Cristian Pache now on the roster. While Cave has and may continue to outperform him, the fact that the Phillies acquired Pache in a trade will probably allow him a bit more leeway.

When it comes to early season roster moves, it’s important not to move on from anyone too quickly. The Phillies may, however, have no choice but to do so with this third player.
