Weather pushed the home opener for the New York Mets back one day to Friday. However, the Mets made sure it was a news-filled Friday before taking the field against the Miami Marlins.

On the negative side, the backlash against the advertising patch being worn on the sleeve of the New York Mets as the season continues took an unexpected turn when owner Steve Cohen said that there would be changes coming to the patch … but not necessarily because of the size of it or the sponsor. It’s the colors that seem to have Cohen rethinking its look.

It will be interesting to see what the patch looks like with the redesign, and exactly how “Met appropriate” it will be.

New York Mets pay tribute to injured Edwin Diaz in best way possible

While the patch might have been a downer for New York Mets fans heading into Opening Day at home, what wasn’t was the way that injured closer Edwin Diaz was introduced before the game against the Marlins. While Diaz won’t be pitching this season after suffering a knee injury following a Puerto Rico win in the World Baseball Classic, the Mets made sure that their All-Star closer was part of the festivities inside Citi Field and that his trumpets once again brought the crowd to its feet.

The trumpets sounding was an inspiring reminder of the good times with the Mets last season as Diaz racked up 32 saves while sporting a 1.31 ERA/0.90 FIP/0.839 WHIP in 62.0 innings of work. Without Diaz, New York has struggled in the late innings, including Milwaukee’s Garrett Mitchell hitting a walk-off homer off Adam Ottavino on Wednesday that dropped New York to 3-4 on the young season.
