STL Cardinals rumors: Paul DeJong could be released by May 1

DeJong has started his important 2023 season on the injured list due to a back injury.

In the meantime, Tommy Edman has taken on the shortstop role, with utility Gold Glover Brendan Donovan playing brilliantly at second base. Taylor Motter is his backup, while Nolan Gorman, the team’s designated hitter, could also help at second base. Meanwhile, prospect Masyn Winn is playing well at AAA Memphis at shortstop. He could quickly help in the middle infield by mid-season.

DeJong has struggled to find consistency at the plate since the Covid shortened 2020 season. When he returns from the injured list, he can earn playing time.  He did spend the offseason with new assistant hitting coach Daniel Nicolaisen to regain focus and form at the plate.

DeJong is in the final guaranteed season of his six-year contract worth $26 million. After this season, he will look to get a new opportunity. When and how he returns from his injured list stint will be very important.

The Cardinals could attempt to trade him to get something in return for him before his possible departure in the offseason.  If the team can’t trade him, he could be released to make room for Winn on the roster. The next few weeks will be important for DeJong and his future.
