Josh Ball might be pushed off the Cowboys roster when it’s said and done

The big question in Dallas at offensive tackle was what the team would do with Tyron Smith as the veteran left tackle was going to carry a hefty cap hit that was untenable. They’ve restructured that contract, though, and now have a strong core on the offensive line that they feel confident in moving forward.

Of the free agency signings that the Cowboys brought in from the outside instead of guys they just re-signed, perhaps one of the most intriguing was Chuma Edoga, a tackle that the team reportedly had their eyes on for some time. Now he’s in Dallas and, as such, they run deep at tackle with Smith, Tyler Smith (though he will likely play guard too), and Terence Steele (returning from a late-season injury) on the roster.

Once again, though it’s not a high priority now, this is again an area where the Cowboys could be looking in the draft. Even if they don’t, though, the path forward for 2021 fourth-round pick Josh Ball seems unfavorable to the Marshall product.

Ball has played just 42 regular-season snaps over two seasons and, frankly, his work in training camp and the preseason hasn’t resulted in the most favorable reviews. He’s struggled mightily as a pass-blocker and, even if there were injuries in Dallas, you’d have a hard time thinking the team would be confident in putting him on the field.

Given that sentiment and, more pressingly, the addition of Edoga this offseason, it feels likely that Dallas will cut ties with Ball, save a little money, and regroup the depth on the offensive line.
