MLB Rumors: 1 player each NL East team should trade at the deadline
MLB Rumors: Miami Marlins should trade utility man Jon Berti
The Miami Marlins are a team with the pitching to compete led by Sandy Alcantara but boast one of the worst offenses in all of baseball once again. It’s only been eight games, but the Marlins are last in runs scored in all of baseball. With their ownership showing an unwillingness to spend, it’ll be very hard for them to get the bats needed for them to win now. With that in mind, they should sell.
Jon Berti is as big of a pest as there is. He’s not a great hitter but is a versatile defender with blazing speed. He led the NL with 41 stolen bases last season in 46 opportunities despite only playing in 102 games. He has the speed that can make a real difference on a playoff team.
With Joey Wendle on the IL Berti has a starting spot at shortstop, but when the Marlins are fully healthy, he doesn’t have a spot to play every day.
Trading a 33-year-old who isn’t much of a hitter and doesn’t have a starting job on your team in exchange for a legitimate asset would be a huge win for the Marlins.
They wouldn’t fetch a top prospect for him, but some team will be willing to give something of decent value up for a guy who can play virtually anywhere on the diamond with the exception of pitcher and catcher, and can win games for you on the bases.
