MLB Power Rankings: Brewers among the best, Cardinals failing their early test
By Tim Boyle
15) MLB Power Rankings: Seattle Mariners
There is definitely a “sink or swim” feeling with the Seattle Mariners this year. A bad omen is how poorly Kolten Wong and Teoscar Hernandez have performed. Let’s not forget about AJ Pollock either. While some of the holdovers from last year have done well, offseason inaction should have fans a little upset right now. There’s a ton of season left. Have some faith. These Mariners are still well afloat.
14) MLB Power Rankings: Boston Red Sox
The Greek Tragedy of baseball. Now 5-4, the Boston Red Sox cut through the Detroit Tigers this past weekend to make up for getting swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier in the week. Adam Duvall has already earned himself free Sam Adams for life in Boston even if he did just get hurt. Next up on the schedule they have four against the undefeated Tampa Bay Rays. It’s really going to be the Red Sox who hand them their first loss, isn’t it?
13) MLB Power Rankings: Chicago Cubs
This is another one of those early respect placements in the MLB Power Rankings. The Chicago Cubs are winning with some regularity early on. They don’t look like a great ball club, but far worse teams have gone far. While Cody Bellinger has been cold in the first few games, Dansby Swanson has been red hot. Also, will Marcus Stroman ever go a day without mentioning on Twitter that he won the Cy Young after he wins it this year? Things are looking up on the Northside.
12) MLB Power Rankings: New York Mets
Now at .500 with a 5-5 record, the New York Mets had the pleasure of facing the Miami Marlins seven times already. They had the unfortunate trip to go against the Milwaukee Brewers in their other games. It’s always tough to know what a team is made of early on. For the Mets, it’s especially difficult because of the opponents they’ve played. Games against the San Diego Padres early this week will test them much more. Specifically, it’s how Max Scherzer performs that will have Mets fans jumping for joy or pleading for the Green Bay Packers to trade Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets already.
11) MLB Power Rankings: Cleveland Guardians
It’s probably not fair to put the Cleveland Guardians this low but next up on the list is a fun one. Technically, they should be the tenth most powerful ball club, or at least it’s fair to put them there. Regardless of where you want to put them personally, the Guardians have shown early on that they can continue to compete in this league. They’re note elite but with Jose Ramirez and Andres Gimenez leading the offense, they can score plenty and sometimes in unconventional ways.
