QBs who could enter transfer portal after spring practice

2. Maalik Murphy, Texas

Maalik Murphy may not have arrived at Texas with the hubbub of Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning but the former four-star quarterback was rated 12th at his position in the 2022 recruiting class. He’s got enough ability to start somewhere in college football.

Let’s just be real here, it won’t be at Texas. Ewers is the returning starter for the Longhorns and Steve Sarkisian can say “competition” as much as he wants, he’s the returning starter.

So Murphy is competing for a backup job with Manning. And it’s pretty clear next year’s quarterback competition to presumably replace Ewers if he leaves for the NFL is Manning’s to lose.

Murphy has two options, and neither of them are terrible to be honest. He can stay and learn under Sarkisian with the most likely outcome of transferring later. Or he can pull the plug now and use the bulk of his eligibility establishing himself elsewhere.

He doesn’t have to make the decision now. But he could.
