MLB Rumors: Braves get great news about Max Fried
By Mark Powell
Atlanta Braves ace Max Fried could be nearing a return as early as next week, per MLB.com’s Mark Bowman.
A slew of injuries in the starting rotation has limited the Braves despite what’s otherwise been an impressive start. Atlanta’s organizational rotation depth has been tested so far this season.
Kyle Wright just came back from an injury to start the season, and Spencer Strider’s velocity is down. Max Fried, who was placed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, is closing in on his return date as well, per MLB.com’s Mark Bowman:
"“It’s now looking like Fried might be activated during next week’s series in San Diego. The lefty threw off a mound and did some fielding drills on Tuesday. He still hasn’t attempted to cover first base — the activity he was performing when he strained his left hamstring on Opening Day. But because the strain wasn’t significant, he has continued to throw during most of his time on the injured list. It seems he could be activated to start Monday or Tuesday’s game against the Padres.”"
What Max Fried’s looming return means for the Braves
When Fried does return, Atlanta’s starting rotation will look much more formidable, albeit top-heavy for now:
- Max Fried
- Charlie Morton
- Kyle Wright
- Spencer Strider
- Bryce Elder
Elder has been a nice surprise for Atlanta, as he has yet to give up a run in two starts. Strider as the fourth option is almost an embarrassment of riches for the Braves. On most teams, he would be the ace and a Cy Young candidate. He may still achieve those goals in Atlanta should he continue to improve, though his location and fastball velo has been off to start the year.
Pitching is supposed to be a strength of this Braves team. Finally, we may see that strength in action.
