Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom was throwing a no-hitter when he had to exit with wrist soreness. Mets fans are just glad it’s not their problem anymore.

Whether the Mets let Jacob deGrom walk in free agency or handed him a giant bag of cash to stay in New York, it was always going to be a risk. Balancing a generational talent with a bad injury habit isn’t easy. They let him walk.

Was it the right choice? Right about now, Mets fans have to feel fairly vindicated because the Rangers are going through the purest version of “The Jacob deGrom” experience.

On Monday night against the Royals, deGrom was dominant, throwing four no-hit innings. Then, just when it looked like the investment was worth it all, he came off the mound with what the team is calling “right wrist soreness.”

You know that meme with James Franco standing on the gallows, turning to the guy next to him and saying, “First time?” Yeah, that’s Mets fans right now.

Mets fans feel relieved they’re off the Jacob deGrom rollercoaster

Taking deGrom off the mound was highly precautionary. And why not? It’s April. The Rangers are 9-6 and sitting in first place in the AL West. They can afford to have the pitcher wrapped in bubble wrap.

Being overly cautious, even during a no-hitter, is better than having deGrom try to push through and hurting himself badly enough to miss extended time.

Still, the bubble wrap is going to have to come off eventually and the fact that deGrom has been dealing with lingering soreness for pretty much the entirety of his Rangers career so far has to be a worry.

deGrom hasn’t appeared in more than 15 games since 2019. But that’s also no longer the Mets’ problem.
