MLB Rumors: Are the Red Sox a potential Shohei Ohtani destination?

As much as the Boston Red Sox may want to sign Shohei Ohtani, it seems unlikely that he’d even consider a move to the East coast, let alone for less money.

Based on Boston’s recent offseason trends — including losing a homegrown talent in Xander Bogaerts to the San Diego Padres — they’re unlikely to make such a bold move for Ohtani. Alex Cora and Chaim Bloom can compliment the Angels two-way star all they want. Ohtani’s most likely suitors at this point remain the Dodgers, Mets, Angels and perhaps Mariners.

FanSided’s Drew Koch wrote about the Red Sox-Ohtani phenomenon this week:

"“It’s easy to argue that Shohei Ohtani, being a two-way player, is better than both Betts and Bogaerts. But if Boston wasn’t willing to pony up the dough to keep either of these two players that helped the team win a World Series in 2018, how can the fans expect that Red Sox ownership will pay what it’s going to take to land a generational talent like Ohtani?”"

As great as it would be to see Ohtani play at Fenway Park more often, his yearly Boston appearance will be just that, rather than a trend in any one direction.

Don’t think too much into this, Red Sox fans.
