Nick Lodolo, Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds recently extended right-hander Hunter Greene to a six-year, $53 million contract that includes escalators that can make the deal worth up to $96.2 million. And they shouldn’t stop there.

Left-hander Nick Lodolo is a potential extension candidate. The 25-year-old is coming off a season in which he posted a 3.66 ERA and 131/39 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 103.1 innings. While he has struggled this season (4.98 ERA in 21.2 innings), his contract status is similar to Greene’s in that he’s arbitration eligible in 2025 and doesn’t become a free agent until 2028.

Lodolo could be hesitant to accept an extension, however, considering that he’s two years older than Greene. If he does a six-year extension like Greene, he wouldn’t become a free agent until he’s 31 — which could leave him in no man’s land on the open market.

Still, it’s a conversation that the Reds should have — and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the conversation has already been had.
