First round mistakes the Steelers cannot make in the 2023 NFL Draft: Drafting a wide receiver

First off, the Steelers just traded for former Pro Bowl wideout Allen Robinson, bringing them to a very respectable top-3 in their wide receiver room. With Robinson, Diontae Johnson and George Pickens, there will be plenty of talent for Kenny Pickett to throw to in his second year.

With that said… my lord, do the Steelers love drafting wide receivers. They didn’t just draft Pickens last year, but they took Calvin Austin in the fourth round and have him coming back from injury. The team just traded Chase Claypool last season, whom they also drafted.

Listen, this is an organization that certainly knows how to draft wide receivers. But, at this point, they can’t do it, at least not in the first round. The heck with that, actually. The Steelers cannot afford to draft a receiver in the first three rounds, period.

At No. 17, they just might be faced with that temptation. TCU’s Quentin Johnston could be there. USC’s Jordan Addison could be there. They’re going to have to resist, because the other needs within this roster are far greater and not worth sacrificing on a position that clearly doesn’t need a top-end talent.
