MLB Rumors: What’s next for Marcell Ozuna?

2023 Marcell Ozuna has looked much like 2022 Marcell Ozuna, and unfortunately the Braves big bopper has not been able to get over the hump. Atlanta extended Ozuna after one of the best seasons of his career in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 campaign, in which he led MLB in home runs.

Ozuna hasn’t been the same since, and was arrested twice as well. He’s been on his last legs for quite some time, and his brutal start to this season means he’s likely on his way out. A buyout is the most likely solution here, as no team would take on the remainder of his contract to inherit the player Ozuna has become. Braves insider Mark Bowman has a theory as to when the Ozuna era in Atlanta may come to a close:

"“So, how much longer will the Braves keep Ozuna? My guess is his tenure could end soon after Michael Harris II and Travis d’Arnaud return from the injured list. Both were cleared to begin taking batting practice on the field on Saturday. Once d’Arnaud returns, he’ll draw some of those designated hitter plate appearances that Ozuna has logged over the past couple of weeks. At that point, Ozuna, who is 4-for-51 this season, will not have any clear role.”"

This makes the most sense, as Ozuna is merely in the lineup to fill voids left in the outfield and at the DH slot. It’s unlikely he’ll be sent down to the minor leagues, either.

It’s finally almost over, Braves fans.
