MLB Rumors: Cardinals have a tough call
The St. Louis Cardinals outfield is about to get crowded, and Dylan Carlson could be the odd man out. Carlson is having a rough season for the struggling Cards, as he’s hitting just .234 and his on-base clip isn’t much better. While it’s only mid-April, the mood in St. Louis isn’t a good one for a fanbase which often expects perfection.
Cards fans need someone to blame, and it might be Carlson after all. As Cardinals insider Derick Goold points out, Jordan Walker, Tyler O’Neill and Alec Burleson likely aren’t going anywhere. And with Nolan Gorman having a career year at the DH slot, that leaves very little room for Carlson when everyone is healthy.
So, what’s the solution here? Optioning Carlson in favor of depth at another position, or even to bring up Adam Wainwright when he’s ready, could very well be the move. It’s a tough conversation to have, as Carlson is an MLB-level player on most teams.
Carlson has been patient and received playing time in center field. Lars Nootbaar is healthy now, as well, and is arguably the better option altogether.
