Best players available Steelers should target on Day 2: Brian Branch, DB, Alabama

Not a single safety was selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. But when it comes to all of the prospects at the position, Brian Branch is easily the best.

This past season at Alabama, Branch recorded 90 total tackles (58 solo, 32 assisted), 14 tackles for loss, seven passes defended, three sacks and two interceptions in 13 games played.

Even though Branch is listed as a safety, he can also be plugged in as a cornerback. Even though the safety position is loaded with Minkah Fitzpatrick, Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee, your goal in the NFL Draft is to usually select the best players available, regardless of need.

Branch is easily one of the best prospects available when they are on the clock with the No. 32 pick.

Best players available Steelers should target on Day 2: Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame

Yes, the Steelers used a second-round pick on Pat Freiermuth recently. But, the Steelers should be in a position to add as many playmakers as possible for Kenny Pickett. Giving him another security blanket will certainly help, and Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer is available.

In his three years with the Fighting Irish, Mayer recorded 180 receptions for 2,099 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Mayer can move the chains due to his ability after the catch, and he can run block, which is a plus to help get running back Najee Harris going. While Mayer may not be a popular pick, he’s one of the top prospects on the board that’s eligible to be drafted.
