Nick Anderson, Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves signing Nick Anderson was a classic Alex Anthopoulos move. He’s an established right-handed pitcher (2.97 ERA in 100 career innings) and was returning from plantar fasciitis in his right foot, which resulted in his release from the Tampa Bay Rays.

Anderson signed a split major-league contract with the Braves in the offseason, which came at virtually no risk and with plenty of potential rewards. And the signing has paid off for both sides.

In 12.2 innings, Anderson has posted a 3.55 ERA and an 18/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He’s emerged as a dependable option in Atlanta’s bullpen and has at least two strikeouts in five of his 11 appearances.

There was widespread interest in Anderson as a free agent. A player of his caliber, let alone with his upside on a split major-league contract, does not come around often. One team that expressed interest and considered Anderson was the New York Mets — though the team ultimately went in a different direction.
