Sell: St. Louis Cardinals’ slow start

Entering the season, I considered the St. Louis Cardinals to be a legitimate World Series contender. But the pitching, or lack thereof, is what was the biggest potential concern.

Lo and behold, that’s exactly how it’s played out. They are 10-21 and 10 games behind the Pirates in the NL Central. Who could have seen that coming?

The pitching has faltered and battled with a number of injuries and poor performance. Perhaps what is most concerning is the performance of Nolan Arenado, who is hitting a career-worst .244/.295/.328 with only two home runs and 14 RBI.

That said, I’m optimistic that Arenado will bounce back. I’m optimistic that the offense as a whole will bounce back. Quite simply, they are too talented not to. And I’m optimistic that president of baseball operations John Mozeliak will make the proper addition(s) to the pitching staff, though I do not expect them to add a frontline starter as the organization has been adamant not to trade from its list of top prospects.

Take a deep breath, Cardinals fans. Better times are coming … I think.
