NBA Mock Draft: Who each lottery team should take with the No. 2 pick
By Ian Levy
On some level, it’s lazy to just assign talented projects to the Spurs and assume their elite player development infrastructure will keep turning out stars. But then again, they just keep doing it. Dejounte Murray is an actual All-Star. Keldon Johnson was seen as an overdraft but they’ve turned him into a two-piece that any contender would be happy to have in their rotation. Devin Vassell was supposed to be a 3-and-D wing but he’s turned into a reliable self-creator, averaging nearly 20 points per game.
With his elite athleticism, finishing, passing and penetration abilities, Thompson’s ceiling may be as high as any other prospect in this draft. But he’s also, presumably, one of the least NBA-ready among the top prospects considering questions about his outside shooting and the level of competition he faced in the Overtime Elite league. The Spurs have the room and roster to let him develop at his own pace, and the structure to help him become the best version of himself.
