Early 53 man roster projections for the Steelers after the 2023 NFL Draft
By John Miceli
Steelers 53-man roster cornerbacks (6): Patrick Peterson, Joey Porter Jr., Levi Wallace, Chandon Sullivan, James Pierre, Cory Trice
Steelers 53-man roster safeties (5): Keanu Neal, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Tre Norwood, Damontae Kazee, Miles Killebrew
The recent announcement that the Steelers would be releasing Arthur Maulet helped to solidify this projection a bit. I think this secondary is going to look considerably different this year, with likely four new starters being added to the fold.
Minkah Fitzpatrick is the unquestioned starter at free safety, but beyond that I think we will see three offseason signees start at cornerback, nickelback, and strong safety — Patrick Peterson, Chandon Sullivan, and Keanu Neal, respectively.
Rookie second-round draft pick Joey Porter Jr. should start the year as the Steelers second boundary cornerback to round out the secondary and has high expectations heading into this season.
Steelers 53-man roster special teamers (3): Chris Boswell, Braden Mann, Christian Kuntz
The interesting decision from the special teams unit is likely to be at punter — with the Steelers having to decide between offseason acquisition Braden Mann and 2021 7th-round pick Pressley Harvin. It is possible the Steelers opt to retain Harvin at the starter, but this roster battle is likely to boil down to who performs better in training camp and the preseason and Mann has the potential to do just that.
