NY Yankees candidate to DFA No. 1: Willie Calhoun
Pretty much everything about Bauers applies to Willie Calhoun. He came into Sunday’s finale versus the Reds batting .219/.284/.370 with 3 home runs in 81 trips to the plate. He had a chance to become a Yankees folk hero this season. Unfortunately, he has reverted back to his old ways.
Believe it or not, there was a time when Calhoun wasn’t one of the last guys on a major league roster. He hit 21 home runs at age 24 in 2019 as a member of the Texas Rangers. He has bounced around a little bit since and struggled to stay in the majors. Mostly utilized as a DH these days, his biggest claim to fame in MLB may be that he was one of the pieces traded in 2017 to the Rangers by the Los Angeles Dodgers for Yu Darvish. His fate with New York is likely to come to a close because of how little he offers on the defensive side of the baseball.
The Yankees may choose to DFA Calhoun once Donaldson returns from the IL or keep him around until they get Giancarlo Stanton back. The odds of the Yankees having Stanton and Calhoun on the roster together are slim. They’re not going to get through the latter months of the season without positional flexibility.
Calhoun has made it an easy call thus far. Hopeful he could be this year’s Matt Carpenter, he hasn’t been anything close.
