3 Packers candidates to be cut going into the summer
Packers cut candidate No. 1: Jonathan Garvin, OLB
Jonathan Garvin was a seventh-round pick by the Packers in 2020 out of Miami and has seen limited time for the defense on the edge over his first three seasons. But the fact of the matter is that Garvin has never truly developed into a meaningful defensive player for Green Bay in his young career to this point.
At best, Garvin is a mediocre pass rusher who has struggled against the run. At worst, he’s a spot-filler on the roster who provides depth on the edge but nothing of substance that would help the defense in a meaningful capacity, even in a pinch.
The Packers obviously drafted Lukas Van Ness in the first round and he’s potentially going to be a Day 1 starter opposite of Preston Smith. However, with the potential plan to put the versatile Iowa product on the interior at least part time to help with shortcomings there, that could, in theory, open the door for Garvin to still stay on for depth reasons.
However, undrafted free agent Brenton Cox Jr. is the complicating factor for Garvin there. Cox, based on talent, could’ve been an early Day 3 or even late Day 2 selection. But off-field trouble throughout his college career hampered his draft stock. Having said that, if he shows up in Green Bay and proves he’s committed and can flash his talent, there’s a good chance he makes the roster.
Should that be the case, Garvin could very well be the odd man out as the results just haven’t been there for him over the past three seasons.
