San Diego Padres progress report: D-

If you looked at Twitter during the offseason, you would have likely seen many pundits proclaiming that money does not win the World Series. Those who made that claim are likely having lots of fun this season with the way the Padres are playing.

The Padres have struggled just to stay above .500 with most of their acquired talent failing to perform. Out of a lineup that should be hitting the cover off the ball, only four players on the Padres have offensive runs above average (OFF) in the green — that’s Xander Bogaerts, Fernando Tatis Jr,  Juan Soto, and Matt Carpenter. Over half of the lineup is below league average, highlighted by Manny Machado’s -4.2 OFF.

It doesn’t help that Machado fractured his wrist just days ago, which could keep him out for quite some time. It’s officially time to hit the panic button in San Diego before it’s too late. A team that resides in the same division as the Los Angeles Dodgers cannot afford such a lackluster start.

The Padres have scored the fourth-least amount of runs this year, and recorded the least number of hits this year. The pitching has been slightly above league average, which is decent enough when this club is playing up to its potential.

The issue is simple — their star hitters have failed to perform to any extent.
