Ranking NFL coaches by hotness of their seat
By Nick Villano
20. Mike Tomlin – Pittsburgh Steelers
Mike Tomlin is and has been one of the top coaches in the league. He’s the second-longest tenured coach in the NFL behind Bill Belichick (wonder where he is now, aren’t you?). He took over for Bill Cowher in 2007, and he’s proven himself every year since. He’s never had a season under .500. How could the Steelers even think about letting a coach like that go?
There always seems to be at least a semblance of smoke coming from Tomlin’s seat every year. The Steelers might continue to have winning seasons, but they haven’t been true contenders for years. Still, his seat isn’t hot yet. He’s pretty safe as far as coaches go, but one bad season could spell the end for Tomlin.
The Steelers are dealing with a second-year quarterback in Kenny Pickett, but the offense looked stagnant last season. Diontae Johnson scored zero touchdowns. Najee Harris sort of lost his starting job to Jaylen Warren. That’s not to say there isn’t growth. George Pickens could be the next great wide receiver. The defense is still really good.
Who knows what the Steelers’ front office wants from this regime? Are they trying to be a championship-caliber team again? Realistically, they don’t have the roster for that. That isn’t Tomlin’s fault. He gets the most out of his players, and his message hasn’t worn thin despite being in that locker room for so long.
