Ranking NFL coaches by hotness of their seat

16. Bill Belichick – New England Patriots
Well, this is awkward. The winningest active head coach could be looking for his next adventure after this season. There are so many rumors saying the New England Patriots are looking at what life could be after Bill Belichick.
While it’s surprising because one would think six Super Bowls affords you a lifelong contract, Robert Kraft and Belichick haven’t seen eye to eye for a long time. It won’t surprise anyone if Belichick’s succession plan plays out worse than Logan Roy’s. He probably wants one of his sons to take the legacy of the Patriots, but unlike an HBO show, real-life football teams demand experience and a track record to take over the top job.
Beyond the succession plan, the Patriots haven’t been that good. Mac Jones went from second in Rookie of the Year voting to one of the worst starters in the league in one season. Putting Matt Patricia, a defensive coach, in charge of the offense was one of the worst decisions in all of football last year. It cost the Patriots a year of offensive development.
The Patriots made right some of its mistakes, including hiring Bill O’Brien to take over the offense. It still doesn’t make up for the seasons of failure that’s following Belichick. Brady left three seasons ago, and the Patriots have had two losing campaigns since then. Belichick can’t afford to make it three, or he will be looking for the best opening eight months from now.
