Ranking NFL coaches by hotness of their seat

11. Mike Vrabel – Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans feel like the one team who could take the biggest nose dive in the NFL. The future at the quarterback position is probably in the hands of Will Levis, but for now, Ryan Tannehill is still the guy. With turmoil starting the season under center, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a smooth transition. The one reason the Titans might be able to make this all work is head coach Mike Vrabel.
Vrabel has been a great head coach since he took over in Tennessee in 2018. He was only a defensive coordinator for one year in Houston before he was given the top job in Tennessee. It worked out, as Vrabel has taken the Titans to the playoffs three times, and even got the number-one seed in an AFC that still had Patrick Mahomes.
Vrabel is in a strange position, coming off his first losing record as head coach. Now, things might get worse. The Titans are hoping some of their star replacements work out, but the wide receiver depth is not there. It’s Treylon Burks and pretty much nothing else. Also, Derrick Henry has to be peak superstar if the Titans are doing anything. That seems unlikely at this juncture of his career.
Can Vrabel survive another losing season? After he was named the Coach of the Year for the 2021 season, he signed an extension. That might make him safe this year, but the team has been on a downward trajectory since he signed that. It all depends on how bad this season goes to see how hot Vrabel’s seat gets.
